Direct effects of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) on Parents and Carers

  • A child who can be violent, misusing substances, in trouble with the police, truanting and going missing from home;
  • A sense of guilt, confusion, isolation and anger as they find out piecemeal what is happening;
  • Judgmental attitudes from many in authority who assume the family is to blame;
  • Helplessness as they are not being heard and excluded from interventions;
  • Practical problems such as loss of job or earnings due to the time and emotion spent on their daughter;
  • Marriage or relationship breakdown through recrimination or differing responses;
  • Health problems including mental health problems arising from enormous stress, sleeplessness e.g. suicidal tendencies;
  • Inability to provide a ‘normal’ home for other children in the family, who can become seriously disturbed in various ways.
  • Violent threats from perpetrators, either directly or via the child;
  • Frustration that perpetrators are not prosecuted
