- A child who can be violent, misusing substances, in trouble with the police, truanting and going missing from home;
- A sense of guilt, confusion, isolation and anger as they find out piecemeal what is happening;
- Judgmental attitudes from many in authority who assume the family is to blame;
- Helplessness as they are not being heard and excluded from interventions;
- Practical problems such as loss of job or earnings due to the time and emotion spent on their daughter;
- Marriage or relationship breakdown through recrimination or differing responses;
- Health problems including mental health problems arising from enormous stress, sleeplessness e.g. suicidal tendencies;
- Inability to provide a ‘normal’ home for other children in the family, who can become seriously disturbed in various ways.
- Violent threats from perpetrators, either directly or via the child;
- Frustration that perpetrators are not prosecuted
